OVER, DE —The Delaware State men’s basketball team got a 35-point showing from the bench, but fell 78-67 to the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens at home Wednesday.

The Hornets (0-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Jevin Muniz, who had 23 points and three steals. Deywilk Tavarez tacked on 12 points and two steals off of the bench and Wesley Oba chipped in as well with 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.

Led by Oba’s four offensive rebounds, Delaware State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 14 boards that resulted in 11 second chance points.

The Delaware State defense was a problem in Wednesday’s game, forcing 15 Delaware turnovers while committing nine. Those takeaways turned into 13 points on the other end of the floor. Muniz’s three steals led the way individually for the Hornets.

How It Happened

Delaware State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 44-28 heading into halftime.

Delaware kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 53-32 advantage before Delaware State went on a 10-0 run, finished off by Oba’s layup, to shrink the deficit to 53-42 with 10:55 to go in the contest. The Hornets were unable to cut further into the deficit by the end of the game, losing 78-67. Delaware State took care of business in the paint, recording 24 of its 39 points in the lane. The Delaware State bench made an impact by adding 35 points to its scoring output. Deywilk Tavarez and Wesley Oba came off the bench to score 12 and 10 points, respectively. The Delaware State defense forced 15 turnovers. Delaware State cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 14 offensive boards in the game. Delaware State got a team-high six rebounds from Wesley Oba.

The Hornets return to action Friday, November 17 when they travel to Atlanta for the HBUC All-Star Classic. Delaware State will face Grambling University. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
